Most people who live in the United States have heard the media and the U.S. Government demonize Cuba, its leaders, and its system. However, have you ever wanted to know what Cuba is really like? If the U.S. media and government have been guilty of fabricating other misconceptions and covering up covert operations in order to deceive the American public, could it be possible that Cuba is another such case? Why would the U.S. continue disseminating Cold War rhetoric about a tiny island nation like Cuba? Who is benefiting from perpetuating a decades-old economic embargo against a country with few allies and fewer resources?

Americans tend to see this island jewel as either “forbidden fruit” or as the communist devil dwelling in our own back yard. But ever since the U.S. imposed the Trade Embargo on Cuba in 1962, it has been nearly impossible for American citizens to visit Cuba legally and come to their own conclusions. Author Jason Old decided that listening to the media and US Government about Cuba wasn’t enough, and instead decided to embark on his own life-changing trip to Cuba to see for himself what the real Cuba was like behind the embargo. Join Jason on his travels across Cuba to get a better sense of the Cuban socialist system, the country’s history, its people, and the culture that make this controversial Caribbean country so inspiring for some, yet so despised by others.

Cuba Behind the Embargo Second Edition edition by Jason Old Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

The book is very informative with the travel information you would need to plan and execute a trip to Cuba. The book covers the basic information a tourist would need prior to traveling to the country like currency, customs, laws and hits all the major cities that you may want to visit. If Cuba is your travel destination, this book is a must have. Although it is not a guide, it will help you in planning the best possible trip to Cuba. This book is chock full of information that would normally only be known by the locals, but allows the reader and future traveler to experience the best of the country. As an added bonus, detailed information on the history and current state of Cuba provides readers, especially Americans, an opportunity to come to their own conclusion on the U.S. imposed embargo.
This book gives a very personal look at Cuba, and yet is very informative. It looks at the nation's government and economics, and the effect that they have on the citizens of Cuba, from multiple perspectives. Old offers an unbiased perspective, and really leaves it up to the reader to interpret his/her opinions, through showing the prizes and shortcomings of the country, and contrasting it to more developed nations. I found this to be a very interesting and educational read, and hope to learn more about Cuba.
Jason Old's Cuba Behind the Embargo is a delightful book for many reasons. Although written by a college professor it doesn't read anything like a textbook. The author provides the reader with extraordinary insight into Cuba, based on two trips he has taken to this often-misunderstood- nation. What makes this narrative so intriguing is he presents various aspects of Cuba's history, culture, and above all, the country's people in an informal one-on-one style, telling you about the day-to-day happenings he experiences as if he was talking to the reader over a cup of coffee in a restaurant. What made the book even more enjoyable for me was he didn't just concentrate on telling us about Cuba's major cities and life in those communities, but addressed the small towns and villages he visited, along with explaining just how beautiful nature is in the wilderness areas of this island. This is a book worth reading for anyone who would like to know more about Cuba, a country which is likely to become more accessible to Americans in the near future as restrictions to this nation, just 90 miles from the U.S. are being lifted.
While this book has some mixed reviews. I would like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it and was highly impressed by the writer's ability to convey how life in Cuba really is like bringing to life many of the important aspects of Cuban life and society against many of our preconceived notions as north americans. It is important to note that this is not an ¨academic¨ style book but rather a very thoughtful and expressive view of one courageous and bold traveler. This book will challenge you in the same way that Michael Moore's movie Sicko has challenge so many to think about where we come from, where we might go to learn, and that people are just people despite being in a different geographic location or under a different poltical regimen. I very much look forward to reading future works by this author as he hopefully will tackle some of the very important social issues which has alludes to at several points throughout the book..
I thoroughly enjoyed Professor Old's intriguing account of his anthro-adventures into Cuba. He did an amazing job weaving the history of Cuba before and after the Revolution, and how the Cuban government has embedded itself into every aspect of daily life for Cubans today. He tells of the Cuban people's love for visitors, their generosity and the appreciation for what they have on their little island.
Professor Old doesn't fail to deliver in this latest installment of his Latin American adventures. I encourage anyone who is curious about a visit to Cuba to read this account. I hear it is an accurate description of the daily routines of the Cuban people from people I know who have traveled there since restrictions were lifted. Awesome read.
I didn't know what to expect when I received this book from Jason Old. I knew that he had traveled to Cuba, had done much research, and had presented more about Cuba than anyone else I have ever met. One of the best parts about this book is that it reads like a novel or a story. When you first think of a book on research experiences, thoughts like statistics, academic lingo, and comprehensive data analysis come to mind. Instead of running into these characteristics, the pages of Old's book take you on a firsthand journey through the country of Cuba. He truly tries to gather information from an objective viewpoint (not an easy thing to do for an American traveling to Cuba). I will admit, at times I was on the defensive while reading this book. I am an American that loves my country and cares deeply for it. Jason drops the lens that American media feeds us about our island neighbor, Cuba. This book will require you to come at Old's experience with a clear mind, objectively understanding and learning about Cuba. After getting over my nationalistic tendencies, my viewpoint and appreciation of Cuba grew exponentially. Jason reveals the people, the heart, and the culture of Cubans that is very rare to come across. The face-to-face recordings you read through will draw you into the culture of Cuba and make you want to travel there yourself! Once again, great job to Jason Old for providing his readers with such a knowledgable, insightful, and intriguing narration of his trips to Cuba.
